Edited by: Sergeant Spot on 25/11/2008 09:56:23 Even when I was cash broke and needed cancer surgery (no joke, happened a bit over a year ago), I never for even one second thought anyone "owed" me anything. (I ended up accepting help from my family, which made me feel like crap as I've been providing for myself sense 1986. Once I get everything paid, I'm going to pay for a family vacation).
Taking life, liberty or property from one person, and then giving it to another, is theft unless the doner approves the transfer. This is true even if children are dying in large numbers. (NOTE: Seizing private property during an actual legal emergency is NOT theft, but the government is liable for cost to the owner)
Having said that.....
A decent and moral society WILL include a lot of charity. This is right and proper. But recieving charity is NEVER a right, not even if your children are dying.
For the record, I don't mind some LIMITED socialism. But under absolutely NO circumstances should charity EVER be viewed as 'right'. Not even if recieved from, and organized by, the state. Not even if funded by legally enacted taxes. Its not the 'spread the wealth' that annoys me. What annoys me is folks demanding wealth they have not earned as if they have a right to it, or even worse, politicians telling them they have a right to it.
Two statements that have no conflict: ---------------------------------------- #1: You are NOT entitle to anything you can't provide for yourself.
#2: In a decent society, decent folks try to be helpful and kind to those around them, be it by direct effort, religious charity, government program, etc....
(Note on #2: Unless you are an experienced homeless shelter worker, Never give a cent to a bum, although pointing him towards an actual job is good. I'm not a fan of government efficiency, but it seems that a lot of folks prefer spreading charity by way of government programs......)
'Need' does not create ownership. 'Work' creates ownership of produced wealth
(Money, or 'capital', is stored 'work' that can be invested to create more wealth) Play nice while you butcher each other.
